Acne Dermabrasion

Acne scars can be a painful reminder of an awkward adolescence but there's no reason you should suffer with scars the way you suffered with acne.

Acne dermabrasion is a popular skin-refinishing treatment that can greatly improve unsightly scarring.

Severe acne can cause the appearance of nodules, which are pus-filled cysts that appear under the skin and can often become quite painful. It is these nodules that are most likely to result in scarring.

Acne dermabrasion deals with this type of scarring using a resurfacing technique. The procedure is typically performed using a hand-held electronic instrument affixed with a rotating wire brush or a sanding tool that contains diamond particles. Typically the acne dermabrasion procedure will be done by a qualified plastic surgeon.

The actual procedure involves the surgeon using the abrasive sanding tool to slough off the layers of skin that have been scarred and damaged by acne. The idea is to gradually scrape away surface irregularities on the skin so it appears smoother.

After acne dermabrasion the skin is usually left red and burnt-looking until it heals. Healing can take anywhere from ten days to three weeks, but as skin heals the old scarred tissue that has been sloughed off should naturally be replaced by a new, smoother layer of skin.

If you have decided that you are interested in having acne dermabrasion you should make sure that you consult a board certified plastic surgeon to do the procedure. The more qualified the person who does your procedure is, the more likely you are to get the sort of dramatic result that you are after.

Keep in mind that acne dermabrasion is used to treat acne scarring, not active acne. In fact, most surgeons will refuse to offer dermabrasion to a patient with active acne because of the risk of infection.

If you do opt to have acne dermabrasion remember you won't see the results of your procedure right away. It may take months for your skin to heal, but once you do begin to see results you will likely be shocked at how much acne dermabrasion can improve your skin and your self-esteem.
