Side Effects and Risks
Chin surgery is not a very risky procedure, however there are few aspects of it that a patient should be aware of. First of all, if the surgery involves an incision inside your mouth, it is important that you inform your surgeon if you have any dental or jaw problems and if you smoke. As with all surgeries, there is always a small possibility of complications following chin surgery such as infection and excessive bleeding. There may be a reaction to the anesthesia or an occurrence of hematoma, seroma, extrusion - this is when the implant works its way back up to the skin's surface - as well capsular contracture which is excess tightening of the scar tissue. All these instances are rare but they may distort the implant cause asymmetry and nerve damage and in some cases bone erosion.
Occasionally, when a facial implant shifts, a second operation may be necessary to replace it in its proper position.
If an infection occurs the plastic surgeon will prescribe a treatment with antibiotics. If the infection is serious the implant might have to be temporarily removed, especially if the infection does not clear up right away. There are other, rare risks that are associated with certain implants. It is important to consult with the surgeon about all of the risks associated with the chin surgery.
Other side effects are common in any type of surgery and they have to do with the recovery time. The amount of the post-operative swelling and bruising is dependent on whether a person has a tendency to swell or bruise. The amount of swelling and bruising is different for different people and past surgeries or injuries should be a good indication. To maximize the effectiveness of recovery time it is important to keep your head elevated, above the level of your heart, when lying down.
Also, applying cold compresses, or small ice packs will reduce swelling and relieve discomfort - lots of patients use a water-tight bag filled with frozen food. Frequent ice compresses are the key to relieving the swelling. If there is pain and discomfort for several days after surgery the doctor should prescribe medication to alleviate it. Also there may be some difficulty talking and smiling for several days after the surgery. Occasionally, persons who had the insides of their mouths affected may be put on a temporary liquid diet. The surgeon will instruct the patient about dental hygiene, eating and any restrictions to your activities after surgery.
In order to minimize the risks you need to be honest and tell your surgeon about any and all medical conditions and any allergies you may have and whether you are a smoker or have dental or gum problems! Also, tell your surgeon about any medications, herbal supplements or natural supplements you are taking , prescription or not. |
